For 26 years, the department of English in St. Aloysius College was only for undergraduate teaching. The commendable achievements and academic excellence maintained by the department during this early phase did subsequently persuade the University of Calicut to upgrade it and offer a postgraduate course in spite of the absence of a complementary degree programme. Launched in the year 1995, the M.A (English Literatures) programme of the department did steer clear of the conventions and introduced Communicative English at post-graduate level for the first time under the University of Calicut. The spirit and commitment to keep up with the latest trends in English studies did subsequently motivate the department to branch into many inter-disciplinary domains. At present the department teaches a variety of valuable and socially significant courses like Women’s Studies, Film Studies, Writing for Media etc., as part of its MA English programme. The newly added BA Degree program in English with Audio-Visual Communication and Journalism gives further scope for students to pursue various career options.
The department has a faculty profile rich in academic excellence. Almost all the members of faculty have doctoral degrees and been regularly working on various research projects. Yet, the department strongly believes that research and pragmatics should go hand in hand, maintains a keen concern of social issues and actively involves in activities like film festivals, social service programmes etc.
Our goal is not merely to produce batches of degree holders every year. The department is committed to the holistic growth of our students and their evolution into socially concerned and politically committed individuals. Simultaneously, we also train them to excel in their chosen fields and careers. A language cum internet lab with broadband connection and a regular stream of visiting academics enable us our students to access the best and the latest in English studies. All the students are also motivated to do research and translations projects, in addition to regular seminar presentations and peer teaching. The department has also been regularly hosting national/international seminars on topics of contemporary relevance.
